School year ends due to coronavirus in Syria’s Raqqa

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the Education Board of the Autonomous Administration ended the current school year by distributing school certificates to students, as a result of the spread of coronavirus.

On April 26, the Education Board announced the end of the 2020/2021 school year, “taking into account the health conditions in the region” in reference to the spread of coronavirus.

Khalaf al-Matar, co-chair of the Education Committee in Raqqa, told North Press that they began distributing school certificates on Sunday while adhering to social distancing.

The number of students in Raqqa is 109,000, covering about 396 schools in the countryside and in the city.

The distribution process will take three days, with the certificate will be given individually to the students, “to avoid overcrowding and under adequate sanitary conditions,” he said.

Al-Matar added that the process was carried out according to the students’ levels of oral and written tests, which were conducted at the beginning of the second semester of this year.

The educational official spoke about the Education Committee’s intention to establish summer clubs in schools to compensate students for what they missed during the lockdown.
