Fifth Corps deploys heavy and medium weapons in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, the pro-government Russian-backed Fifth Corps deployed heavy and medium weapons in separate areas of the Syrian Desert, west of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

Ghaith al-Ali (a pseudonym), a field commander in the Fifth Corps, told North Press that the weapons and their ammunition, including machine guns, mortar launchers and Grad rockets, in addition to their ammunition were brought to the desert of Ma’dan and al-Tabbani in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

According to what al-Ali claimed, “The aim of the reinforcements is to repel the attacks of ISIS cells targeting points and checkpoints of the corps from time to time in the region.”

The desert in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor is witnessing continuous activity by ISIS cells, and the repeated targeting of the Corps members in particular and government forces and their affiliated groups in general has increased in the region.

He stated that they were only asked to raise their readiness at the present time and repel ISIS attacks and target areas where it is believed to be in the depths of the Deir ez-Zor desert.

During April, the groups supported by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards carried out a combing operation in the vicinity of their points in al-Adbiyya Desert in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, in order to increase protection for their points in the town and its surroundings.
