Water outage continues in Damascus and its countryside amid fears of health disaster
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The water crisis continues in the cities and towns of Damascus and its countryside due to the lack of electricity, amid warnings of a health disaster.
Two weeks ago, the water was cut off, as tanker owners in the area took advantage of the crisis and received large sums of money in exchange for providing the residents with water.
Hamad Basbous (a pseudonym), a resident of Jaramana, called for coordination between the electricity and water directorates in the city to solve the problem of not pumping water to the city.
He told North Press, “These justifications are nothing but to evade responsibility…they have to coordinate with the Electricity Directorate to ensure that water reaches all neighborhoods of the city, otherwise we are facing a health disaster.”
The price of ten barrels of water has reached 15,000 Syrian pounds, which is a large amount for the residents in comparison to the economic situation and the poor living conditions they are going through.
Rasha Asaad, a resident of the town of Sahnaya, said that she cannot buy water on a daily basis, as her income is unable to cover the expenses of buying water.
She added, “There is an agreement between Sahnaya water manager and the owners of the tanks, who now control the population and the price of water, according to their whims, without being monitored or punished.”
