Tribal figure killed after attempt to end clashes in Syria’s Qamishli

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Sheikh Hayyes al-Jaryyan, a prominent figure of the Bani Saba’a tribe, was assassinated late Thursday night, succumbing to his wounds after he was targeted by snipers from the pro-government National Defense Forces (NDF) near his home in northeast of the National Hospital, south of Qamishli.

Local sources said that pro-government NDF snipers targeted al-Jaryyan following his efforts with a civilian delegation to end the clashes taking place in the city.

Al-Jaryyan sustained three bullet wounds to the chest, to which he succumbed shortly after his transfer to the hospital despite the doctors’ attempts to to revive him, according to a medical source.

Al-Jaryyan had strong relations with officials in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), and with well-known tribal figures in the Syrian Jazira region.

Since Tuesday, Qamishli has been witnessing clashes between the Asayish and militants from the pro-government NDF.

“A member of the NDF fired at a checkpoint of our forces at al-Wehda Roundabout in the city of Qamishli, which resulted in the martyrdom of one of our members,” the Asayish said in a statement published late on Tuesday night.

Late Wednesday the Asayish took control of a National Defense headquarters known as the Lilo Detachment, as well as security sites in al-Tai neighborhood, south Qamishli.

On Wednesday, representatives of the Asayish and the Syrian government reached an understanding that would lead to a ceasefire under the auspices of the Russian forces operating in the region.

The two sides reached an understanding leading to end the clashes in the city, and the Asayish would retain the sites that they had taken over during the past 48 hours, according to what a local source told North Press.

Hours after the calm, clashes resumed in the neighborhood after the NDF gunmen targeted a position of the Asayish forces.

On Tuesday, a child was killed by the targeting of the pro-Syrian government NDF near al-Wehda Roundabout in Qamishli.
