Syria’s Raqqa Municipality seals shops violating complete lockdown

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, Raqqa’s Municipality, north Syria, sealed with red wax the doors of several shops that violated the decision of the complete lockdown against the coronavirus outbreak issued by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

The police department of the Raqqa municipality patrolled the city’s markets and closed the shops that violated the lockdown decision and sealed them.

In a previous statement to North Press on Wednesday, co-chair of the Interior Committee of the Raqqa Civil Council and a member of the Crisis Cell Mustafa Mahmoud said that the procedures for following up the implementation of the total closure “will be limited to alerting the population.”

On Wednesday, North Press released footage in Raqqa city that showed patrols of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) closing shops and urging people to implement the lockdown decision.

On April 11, AANES issued a decision to begin a complete lockdown in all its areas that was preceded by a complete one in Raqqa, Qamishli, and Hasakah, and a partial one in other areas.

On Tuesday, head of the Health Care Department at Raqqa Civil Council Ali Abdel Aziz told North Press that the number of the infections recorded in Raqqa could become a potential tragic situation if the residents do not commit to the lockdown.

Areas in northeast Syria are witnessing increasing numbers of coronavirus cases, recording 13,203 confirmed infections including 442 deaths and 1,407 recoveries.

During a press conference on Monday, the AANES Health Board appealed to the World Health Organization and international organizations to prevent a humanitarian disaster that may take place due to the outbreak of coronavirus in the AANES-held areas.
