Kurdistan Regional Government: Hawl Camp terror plot foiled
ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – On Monday, President of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq (KRG) Masrour Barzani said that their security forces foiled a terrorist plot targeting Erbil, which was planned in Hawl Camp in northeast Syria.
Earlier on Tuesday, the KRG Security Council broadcasted the confessions of “a terrorist network that was intending to carry out operations in the region.”
“Following a months-long security operation, our forces managed to foil a terrorist plan in Erbil,” Masrour Barzani said in a statement.
“The plan was formed in Syria and the terrorist group, which is affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS), is under arrest and investigation and received orders and instructions to implement it,” he pointed out.
“According to the given information, ISIS developed the plan in Hawl Camp, and this thing is worrying and shows that the organization still has the capabilities to cross the border illegally,” he added.
Barzani called on the Global Coalition to take these threats against peace and stability in the KRG into consideration.
In late March, the Internal Security Forces (Asayish), supported the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeast Syria, started a security campaign in Hawl Camp, in which about 60,000 ISIS families reside.
The security campaign was called “Humanity and Security” and aimed to reduce the danger of ISIS sleeper cells that have killed 47 people since the early 2021.
During the campaign, 125 ISIS agents were arrested, including 20 responsible for the sleeper cells and assassinations that took place in Hawl Camp. Military supplies and electronic circuits used in preparing explosive devices were also found, according to a statement by Asayish in northeast Syria.
