Iraqi security delegation visits Sinjar under Erbil-Baghdad agreement

ERBIL, Iraq (North Press) – On Monday, the Iraqi Minister of Interior, Othman al-Ghanimi, arrived in Sinjar District in Nineveh Governorate, northern Iraq.

In a brief statement, al- Ghanimi’s Media Office stated that the Minister of the Interior, accompanied by Iraqi Army Chief-of-Staff and the Commander of the Border Guards, arrived at the headquarters of the 20th Division in Sinjar District.

The security authorities have not revealed other details about the purpose of the visit yet.

Dawoud Jundi, official of the formations of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Sinjar, said that the visit of the security delegation came under the agreement between Erbil and Baghdad, “which has not been implemented until now.”

Speaking to North Press, Jundi indicated to the security seen in the district.

The visit was preceded by a series of security visits aimed at meeting with the political and security forces, and the residents of the region.

“I think the aim of the visit is related to the agreement signed between Baghdad and Erbil on October 9, 2020,” Jundi added.

He pointed out that the basics of that agreement “have not yet been implemented. It can be summed up in four points, namely the security point, its management, reconstruction, and the return of the displaced).”

He stated that the security point is “what preoccupied the Iraqi side the most, noting that Sinjar has no security problem currently, and has become free from terrorist groups as well as from any illegal forces, according to the military and security leaders.”

The official stressed the need to “pay attention to the other points, and not only to the security one that is not the problem.”

“The issue of reconstruction and managing the city is more important, and thus they positively affect the issue of the return of the displaced,” he concluded.
