Increasing numbers of coronavirus infections: Syria’s Kurdish Red Crescent

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, the Kurdish Red Crescent, working in the Autonomous Administration areas of northeast Syria, said that the number of cases of coronavirus has increased seven times over the past month, while the number of critical cases has not decreased in Raqqa, Hasakah, and Qamishli hospitals despite the imposition of total lockdown.

The official account of the Kurdish Red Crescent on Facebook published figures and statistics showing the escalation of the pandemic in the regions of northeast Syria, and the organization also attached a file that included graphs for these statistics.

The percentages show the increase in the infection rate in March compared to February by 700%, and a 39% increase in the mortality rate among people aged 40-59 years old.

During February, the hospitals for coronavirus in Hasakah, Qamishli, and Raqqa did not contain more than five critical cases, but the number increased during March to reach between 25 and 30 cases, according to the Kurdish Red Crescent.

The statistics showed that the numbers of critical cases are still “the same despite the imposition of full lockdown.”

The Deir ez-Zor Civil Council also announced the complete lockdown in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor that began on the same day, while the Health Board later imposed a full lockdown on the Euphrates region starting from Friday.

The Kurdish Red Crescent urged people with coronavirus to receive medical treatment at an early stage, “because it increases the chances of recovery.”
