Lockdown period is insufficient: Health Committee in Syria’s Raqqa

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – The co-chair of the Health Committee in the Raqqa Civil Council, Kassar al-Ali, considers the 6-day lockdown period in the areas of northeast Syria to be ”insufficient from the medical point of view.”

”The situation will be reassessed at the end of the lockdown, and the appropriate decision will be taken to extend the complete lockdown or impose a partial lockdown,” al-Ali told North Press.

On Saturday, the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria (AANES) decided to impose a complete lockdown on the cities of Hasakah, Qamishli, and Raqqa for a period of one week, starting from Tuesday, April 6 until April 12.

The complete lockdown decision came after the escalation in the number of coronavirus infections in the regions northeastern Syria.

This morning, North Press published a video in Raqqa showing a clear lack of commitment to the lockdown decision.

”The increasing number of coronavirus cases in northeast Syria was evident during March and April, as part of the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic,” al-Ali added.

”The main goal of the complete lockdown decision is to limit the rapid spread of coronavirus among the people, and to prevent gatherings that constitute a suitable environment for the transmission of infection between people,” he pointed out.

“Children’s gatherings while playing are dangerous, as the child transmits the infection to his family members without showing symptoms of infection,” he stated.

On Monday, the AANES’s Health Board recorded four deaths and 304 new coronavirus cases, bringing the infections’ toll to 10,813, including 396 deaths and 1,344 recoveries.
