Syria rejects Brussels Conference’s outcomes

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian government rejects the 5th Brussels Conference which was held on Monday in Brussels under the co-chair of the EU and UN.

80 delegations from 50 countries, NGOs and international financial institutions participated in the conference entitled “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region”, which was held virtually.

The participants of the conference, which lasted for two days, pledged up to $4.4 billion for 2021, and $2 billion from 2022 on for Syria and the region.

The Syrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates sent a message to the UN Secretary-General and the president of the Security Council saying that Brussels Conference is illegitimate.

Meanwhile, Russia criticized the failure to invite the Syrian government to attend the conference, which aims at raising more than $10 billion for humanitarian aid for displaced Syrians, supporting refugees and host communities in the region.

The Syrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs considered “the participant of the UN in chairing the conference amid the absence of the government of the concerned country contradicts the principles of the UN Charter and the Security Council’s resolutions linked to them.”

On Tuesday, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement called for the international donors to help the reconstruction of the country especially repairing the services of health, water and electricity.

The EU said in a statement that the broader goal of Brussels Conference is the continuation of support of the Syrian people and mobilize the international community to support a comprehensive and reliable political solution for the conflict in Syria.

The UN Security-General stressed that the humanitarian aid and protection that the UN agencies and its partners provide in the humanitarian filed is for many the only source to keep alive.
