Security campaign aims to protect Syria’s Hawl Camp: SDF official

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) official Newroz Ahmed said that Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Syria’s Hawl Camp “have been planning to rebuild [the caliphate], forming a real risk and threats against the residents of the camp, area, and the world.”

“It is a humanitarian campaign aiming to protect the camp’s residents against murder and prevent weapons smuggling in the camp,” Ahmed added.

“A while ago, we had discussions with humanitarian organizations operating inside the camp and the Global Coalition,” Ahmed said during an exclusive interview with North Press.

Since early 2021, murders inside the camp have shaprly increased, leading the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) and SDF to launch a security campaign on March 28.

On Tuesday, Asayish General Command said in a statement that they arrested 53 wanted ISIS militants during the security campaign in Hawl Camp.

“Among the detainees, there are five militants who are responsible for ISIS sleeper cells that carried out terrorist attacks and violence inside the camp,” the statement added.

“Several cellphones and laptops that had information about terrorist sleeper cells were confiscated,” according to the statement.
