Coronavirus outbreaks in Syrian government-held areas

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – A source from the School Health Directorate in the Syrian Ministry of Education told North Press that the number of coronavirus infections in governmental schools have exceeded 2,000, since the beginning of the academic year.

Last week, the number of infections in Damascus and its countryside have doubled, where “it reached more than 150 confirmed cases,” among the students and teachers.

The number of recorded coronavirus infections within governmental schools during the second semester of the academic year has risen to 420, according to the source.

Since the beginning of the second semester, the number of recorded infections in schools was ranging between 20 and 24 per week, whereas after February 25, the recorded number came up to 44 per week, the source added.

“Schools in Damascus have not implemented effective procedures against coronavirus outbreak,” the source pointed out.

On March 29, the total infections in government-held areas has risen to 18,775, including 12,610 recoveries and 1,254 deaths, according to the statistics of the Syrian Ministry of Health. 

The Ministry of Education in Damascus demanded its directorates in all governorates to implement protective measures according to the health protocol, such as wearing face masks.

“The educational process continues according to the health preventative measures, and it is under control,” the Syrian Minister of Education, Darem Taba’, told the state’s television.
