Nine arrested in security campaign in Syria’s Hawl Camp

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Internal Security Forces (Asayish) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by counter-terrorism units and the rapid intervention force, arrested nine wanted individuals as part of a security campaign in Hawl Camp, east of Hasakah city.

The official spokesman for the Asayish, Ali al-Hassan, added that among the arrested individuals was an Iraqi ISIS recruiter known as Abu Saad al-Iraqi.

About 6,000 members of Asayish, SDF, and Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) are participating in the campaign, which was launched on Sunday.

The campaign is scheduled to last for 15 days, while security forces imposed a curfew starting at 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM in all sectors.

On Monday, SDF Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi called on foreign countries to “take back their citizens & give more humanitarian support to [Hawl Camp] to improve the conditions & stability in the camp.”

Abdi tweeted on his official account that the forces started a humanitarian and security campaign in Hawl Camp aiming to “arrest ISIS criminals and protect civilians.”

Since early 2021, ISIS sleeper cells have killed 47 individuals inside the camp, according to a report by Asayish.

Hawl Camp includes more than 60,000 people, including ISIS supporters and families and large numbers of children.

ISIS families and fighters formed a special administration known as hizba groups (ISIS police), which are assigned to teach ISIS courses to children within the camp, “in an attempt to preserve and revive ISIS when it is possible,” according to the Asayish report.

The Asayish spokesman added that the Global Coalition continues to support the efforts of the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Asayish.
