KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the General Management of Bakeries in Kobani, north Syria, raised the price of a bundle of bread by 40 Syrian pounds (SYP), as the price of a bundle weighing a kilo was raised from 110 to 150 SYP.
Aziz Abdi, director of General Management of bakeries in Kobani, told North Press that the decision to raise the price of bread “came after the bakeries’ owners complained about the expenses, high prices of spare parts and high wages of the workers that cause losses to the owners of private bakeries.”
“Private bakeries cover the needs of half of Kobani’s population, where there are about ten private bakeries, and the region’s needs of bread are covered by public and private bakeries,” he added.
Abdi pointed out that they subsidize the private bakeries with materials such as yeast, salt, flour and sacks.
He indicated that the decision to raise the price of bread came after meeting and discussion between the Economic Committee and Bakeries’ Management in Kobani in order to solve the problem of the private bakeries.
“It is a temporary decision until a general decision is issued by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria to determine the weight and price of a bundle of bread in all regions,” Abdi noted.
On March 17, 2020, the price of a bundle of bread in Kobani increased from 100 to 110 SYP after the Agricultural Community Development Company decided to raise the price of a ton of subsidized flour from 50,000 to 60,000 SYP.
