Child Protection Office hands over minor to family in Syria’s Kobani

KOBANI, Syria (North Press) On Wednesday, the Child Protection Office in Armed Conflicts in Kobani, north Syria, handed over a child, who had joined the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), to his family.

Fathi Sheikh Khedr, the co-chair of the Child Protection Office in Kobani, said that a 17-year-old child was handed over to his parents in coordination with the Military Council in Kobani.

Sheikh Khedr added that the child was handed over to his parents even though no complaint was filed to the office.

The Child Protection Office in Armed Conflicts in Kobani has received 60 complaints from the residents regarding child recruitment so far, according to Sheikh Khedr.

Since its opening, and in coordination with the SDF Relations Office, the Office has returned 12 minors to their families, as he stated.

The AANES Executive Council established the Child Protection Office late in August 2020. This step came after an agreement signed by the SDF Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi with the United Nations to prevent the recruitment of children and their use as combatants in armed conflicts.
