March uprising chanted for freedom, dignity: Syrian politician
QAMISHLI, Syria (North press) – On Monday, a Syrian opponent said that the March uprising in Syria chanted for freedom, dignity and demanded reform.
Mohsen Hazam, member of the Preparatory Committee of the National Democratic Front, told North Press that the “regime” has set the security and military solution as a goal “to eliminate the revolution under the banner of fighting terrorism.”
“Terrorist groups such as ISIS and al-Nusra Front operated in the Syrian war and involved the disputed parties in a proxy war aimed at dividing Syria and seizing its wealth and capabilities,” Hazam added.
He pointed out that during the ten years, the revolution has not achieved its dream, and it has been lost in the hands of a dysfunctional opposition.
“The opposition today, are waiting for the decisions of the international and regional actors interfering in the Syrian crisis to achieve an honorable political solution that satisfies all parties,” he noted.
He stressed the need to activate the UN Resolution 2254, which secures the political transition process.
On the other hand, the regime and its Russian and Iranian allies insisted on prolonging the plight by occupying the parties with a constitutional committee that has not presented anything so far, according to the Syrian politician and opponent.
“The opposition represented by the Syrian Negotiating Commission is in a state of paralysis due to its internal disputes,” Hazam stated.
He stressed, “Our people remain committed to the goals of the revolution, waiting for Syria to recover, to move to a safe place where the displaced people can return to their homes to participate in building it.”
In turn, Muhammad Fattoum, member of the National Coordination Committee, told North Press that it is natural for a people to rise up after decades of oppression and persecution.
“The martial laws and emergency law became a permanent rule, where the aim of which was not to liberate the occupied territory and confront Israel, but rather to uproot its opponents and terrorize the people,” he said.
Fattoum pointed out that this was the reason for the March uprising and its transformation into mass peaceful demonstrations in most of the Syrian governorates and regions, chanting for freedom, dignity and calling for reform.
Instead of responding to the demands, the authority adopted the security solution, followed by military solution and excessive punitive and vengeful brutality, according to Fattoum.
“That policy resulted in the expansion of the uprising, and the authority’s use of regional allies, militias and states, after the opposition parties turned into armed groups,” as he said.
“Those facts formed the terrorist and sectarian organizations such as ISIS, al-Nusra Front and the groups affiliated with al-Qaeda,” he noted.
“The issue of the survival of the people requires international and regional consensus,” he concluded.
