Diversity should lead Iraq to better future: Christian organization in KRG

ERBIL, KRG, Iraq (North Press) – The head of a Christian organization in Erbil stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence, and said that the tolerance and diversity that the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG) witnessed in welcoming the Pope is worthy of leading the country, rather than political and sectarian blocs.

Pope Francis, Pope of the Catholic Church, arrived in Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG), on Sunday, and then headed to Mosul.

“[This is] a very great historical event,” said Nawzad Boulos Hakim, head of the Suraya Culture Organization

He pointed out that the Pope was scheduled to head to Mosul, after which he will return Erbil and then to the predominantly Christian town of Ain Kawa, where he would tour, before holding the largest mass in Iraq at Franso Hariri Stadium.

“This picture of Iraqi diversity in general and the special diversity in the Kurdistan Region should be the predominant one that leads the country to a better future, not these political blocs and the abhorrent political movement, nor the abhorrent sectarianism from which we suffered,” he told North Press.

“So this beautiful sweet atmosphere with children and an olive branch confirms that we will have a better future, and our hope is that the flags of freedom, democracy, safety, and stability will fly in Iraq,” he added.

A large mass will be held in the presence of the Pope at the Franso Hariri Stadium in Erbil today, before his return to Baghdad and then to the Vatican.
