Turkey weaponizes water for political gains: human rights organization in Syria’s Kobani

KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, the Human Rights Organization in the Euphrates Region issued a statement in which it condemned Turkey’s constant cut-off water to the eastern Euphrates regions, north Syria.

“Turkish practices is a flagrant violation of the international law and human rights,” co-chair of the Euphrates region Human Rights Organization, Ahmad Dawoud, told North Press.

“Turkish state weaponizes water for political and military gains without taking into account the humanitarian needs of the citizens of the eastern Euphrates,” Dawoud added.

He pointed out that such practices are systematic, immoral and inhumane.

Turkey keeps water in six dams, the largest of which is Ataturk Dam and the second largest in the Middle East, with a storage capacity of 48 billion m³, violating by that the international agreement.

According to the agreement signed between Syria and Turkey in 1987 related to the Euphrates River, Syria’s share of water coming from Turkey, is 500 m³ per second.
