QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Member of the Syrian opposition National Coordination Committee (NCC), Munther Esper, has recently called for a political initiative in which he proposed holding a general national conference and joining the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) to the Syrian Negotiation Committee.
The Syrian political opposition lives in unhealthy and disturbing situations due to the unstable objective and subjective reasons.
“The Syrian opposition is witnessing divisions among itself as it depends on external powers, which leads to the absence of a unified independent national will,” Esper told North Press.
“The current situation of the opposition opens the door to all external powers to pursue their own interests and to evade their responsibilities in finding a peaceful solution in accordance with the UN Resolution 2254,” he added.
He believed that the situation of the Negotiation Committee must be corrected, “that is, by dissolving the Syrian National Coalition’s (SNC) control over it, and correcting the independence of the Syrian national decision in it.”
He called for the necessity of “achieving a representative balance and a periodic presidency, as well as opening the door for other democratic national representative groups to join the negotiation.”
“Nationally and democratically, the entry of the SDC into the Negotiation Committee is dictated by a peaceful negotiated solution for all of Syria, given that the solution is for all Syrians,” he noted.
“All the democratic national forces are called upon to take a positive attitude on entering the SDC to the Negotiation Committee, in accordance with the UN Resolution 2254, which provides for the unity of Syria, land and people,” he stated.
The Negotiation Committee suffers from a democratic vacuum, represented by the SNC’s takeover of the decision, as it revolves around Turkey and the US mainly, exactly like the Syrian regime revolves mainly around Russia and Iran, according to Esper.
Concerning the UN Security Council resolutions regarding Syria, he said, “There is a problem, as the resolutions cannot be implemented without the consensus of all members of the Council, that is, without using the right of veto.”
The use of the veto in the Security Council shows the imbalance of powers in it, in addition to the conflict of political and the geo-strategic interests among its members.
Esper pointed out that his call to hold the national conference is, “because the national democratic issue is no longer in the hands of the Syrians, and the Syrian elites are suffering from a crisis of isolation away from the people.”
The conference will be held in the current situation, with “representatives of all Syrian regions, including spiritual figures, opinion leaders and social activists.”
It will also include “youth, political, cultural, scientific and professional efforts with the representation of women, and there will be a roadmap soon,” according to Esper.
