Child Protection Office of Syria’s AANES returns minor to family in Hasakah
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, the Child Protection Office in Armed Conflicts in Hasakah, northeastern Syria, handed over a minor, who had joined the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to his family.
In October, the Child Protection Office was established in all cities of Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria (AANES). This step came after an agreement signed by SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi with the United Nations to prevent the recruitment of children and their use as combatants in armed conflict.
Khaled Jabr, co-chair of the Child Protection Office in Hasakah, told North Press that they received a complaint about a 15-year-old minor who joined the (SDF), where he was handed over to his family.
At the end of June 2019, the SDF, with approval from AANES, signed a joint action plan with the United Nations to end and prevent the recruitment of children under the age of 18.
Head of the Child Protection Office in AANES, Murhaf Al-Abdullah, had previously told North Press that they had gone a long way in ending the recruitment of minors.
The number of children handed over to their families has reached 39 so far since the establishment of the Child Protection Office.
