Syrian regime never allows room for discussion: opposition figure

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – “TheSyrian regime has never allowed a room for any mature political discussion,” civil and political activist Fateh Nassif said on Tuesday.

The Astana trio (Iran, Russia, and Turkey) are holding a series of corrective two-day meetings starting on Tuesday for the Constitutional Committee’s meetings in Geneva.

The fifth round of the Constitutional Committee concluded in “utter failure” due to the Syrian government performance, and was “disappointing” according to UN Envoy Geir Pedersen’s description.

The Astana meeting is witnessing a broader-scale attendance by Arab and international countries, including Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq, as observers, and it is expected that Pedersen will participate.

“The Syrian regime did not make any positive effort towards the political solution, neither earlier nor later, because it believes in neither the political solution nor in politics,” Nassif, who resides in Germany, told North Press.

The Syrian regime cannot accept the idea of sharing power, which it agreed to during Syrian negotiations in Sochi and others only under Russia’s orders, he pointed out.

“The regime takes too much time to get international support that no one else can rule Syria under its lasting pretext, which is the terrorist groups that it has found and supported,” he added.

“The Syrian regime is not able to make room for real negotiations, because Russia and Iran are the ones making decisions, as they have a card to blackmail America and Europe,” he concluded.
