Israel bombed Damascus to stop Iranian weapons transfer to Hezbollah
RAMALLAH, Palestine (North Press) – On Monday, a military source said, the recent Israeli bombardment of the vicinity of the Syrian capital, Damascus, came to thwart the transfer of Iranian weapons to Hezbollah.
Israel has not officially commented on the bombardment that targeted military sites near Damascus last night.
The bombardment came a day after the Iranian Defense Minister, Brigadier General Amir Hatami, threatened that Iran would not stand idly about the Israeli raids in Syria.
An informed source who resides in 48 Palestinian territories told North Press that the bombing came due to the active air traffic between Damascus and Tehran in the past few days.
The source indicated that the air traffic aimed to transfer sophisticated military equipment from Iran to Damascus and then to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The source argued that the bombing was intended to thwart the transfer of certain weapons, particularly missiles.
However, the source expected a connection between the bombing that occurred at night, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leaving a ministerial session on coronavirus during the daylight, as he interrupted his deliberations for an urgent security reason.
The source stressed the existence of a deliberate Israeli policy for preventing Iran from continuing its presence in Syria in any way, especially in Golan Heights area.
The Israeli policy comes in light of the recent attempts by Hezbollah to position in Golan Heights under Iranian orders, according to the source.
Israel insists on implementing a plan, which it describes as deliberate, to achieve two goals; first of which to prevent Iran and its militias from being placed in Syria, and secondly, to thwart the transfer of sophisticated equipment from Iran to Hezbollah through Damascus.
Israel says that Syria will not enjoy calm and stability as long as Iran continues to be stationed and active there.
Syrian reports indicated that Israeli Air Force warplanes attacked Hezbollah military targets near Damascus International Airport last week.
