SDF, Asayish, Culture Board pledge to protect Syria’s archaeological sites
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, the General Command of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) held a meeting that included representatives of the Culture Board in the Autonomous Administration and the leadership of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish), to coordinate the mechanism for protecting archaeological sites in northeastern Syria.
Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi chaired the meeting.
In October of 2020, the SDF General Command issued a set of military instructions, through which it pledged to ensure that archaeological and cultural property is respected during the armed conflict and not compromised.
The SDF said that it would take all measures with civil authorities in northeastern Syria to protect archaeological and cultural sites even in the absence of any conflict.
During the meeting, the Antiquities Protection Directorate explained the nature of the archaeological sites and the obstacles they face in preserving them.
The meeting concluded with the need for coordination and intensification of efforts with the Asayish, the military police, and the military forces to protect the archaeological sites in northeastern Syria.
