SDF resumes anti-ISIS operations in Syria’s Hasakah, Deir ez-Zor

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – TheSyrian Democratic Forces (SDF) resumed their military campaign against Islamic State (ISIS) sleeper cells in the desert between al-Dashisha and Markada, south of Hasakah, and areas in Deir ez-Zor on Tuesday.

On Friday, the SDF announced a large-scale military operation against ISIS sleeper cells with the participation of the People’s Protection Units, the Women’s Protection Units, and the Internal Security Forces (Asayish).

“The forces combed a number of villages and tents in the desert searching for wanted fugitives related to ISIS,” a field leader participant in the campaign told North Press.

This took place two days after suspending the operation following combing a number of villages in the countryside of Markadah, south Hasakah.

On Monday, the spokesperson of the Global Coalition Colonel Wayne Marotto announced the continuation of joint military operations with the SDF to pursue Islamic State (ISIS) sleeper cells.

Marotto shared a post on Twitter about a joint military operation with SDF which resulted in the arrest of an individual smuggling ISIS families out of Hawl Camp in Hasakah’s countryside.

“Such operations demonstrate our unified effort to #DefeatDaesh, provide security, & deny the terrorists the needed resources to resurge in the area,” Marotto tweeted.

The SDF was able to arrest one of its wanted men, without revealing his name, the smuggling network in which he worked, or the destination to which the families of the organization were sent.

The participating forces arrested more than 30 ISIS members and took over a tunnel which ISIS used as a room for its operations, in addition to seizing weapons and ammunition, media official of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) Siyamend Ali told North Press early this week.
