Israel to continue targeting Syria despite US objections: politician

RAMALLAH, Palestine (North Press) – On Sunday, a political source based in Israel said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will clarify, during a phone call with US President Joe Biden, his refusal to return to the Iranian nuclear agreement and the cessation of US support for Saudi Arabia in the Yemen war.

Regarding the pace and geography of the Israeli strikes in Syria during the Biden era, the source added that “in any case, there is strategic cooperation between Israel and the US, regardless of which administration holds the presidency in the United States.”

Whenever intelligence information is available regarding the transfer of weapons from Iran to Iraq and then to Syria and Lebanon, “Israel will not hesitate to target them, regardless of the position of the US administration.”

More than a month ago, Israel joined the Central Command, and this means close cooperation between the Israeli and American armies, according to the source.

In the context, Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper said that Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, who is aware of the economic malaise in his country, is still adhering to the position that the solution to the crisis is not in lifting sanctions but in neutralizing them.

The newspaper added that this can be done by a “resistant economy” based on reducing economic dependence on oil and developing local industries.

However, “this does not mean that he will not be ready in the future, as he did in the past, for a tactical settlement that is compatible with changing circumstances,” the newspaper noted.

The newspaper added that the thought that Iran’s economic situation will continue to deteriorate and will eventually force it to retreat from its current positions could turn out to be “false hopes.”
