Semalka crossing closed by Kurdistan Regional Government for system overhaul

DERIK, Syria (North Press) Baz Ahmed, Director of the Relations Office at Semalka border crossing between the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq (KRG), said on Thursday that the KRG has closed the crossing until further notice for reasons related to changing the crossing and entry system.

He added in a phone call with North Press that the administration of the crossing on the KRG side notified them that they will change the work system at the crossing, without mentioning any other details.

The administration of Semalka crossing announced on its Facebook page on Wednesday that the crossing would be closed starting on Thursday.

“We ask travellers to postpone their scheduled appointments until a new circular is issued regarding normal resumption of the crossing’s movement,” the post read.

Baz Ahmed stated that the crossing of media organizations and institutions has been suspended until further notice, though commercial and trade movement continues unhindered.
