Opposition must announce withdrawal from Constitutional Committee, Syrian opposition figure

ISTANBUL, Turkey (North Press) – On Wednesday, a Syrian opposition human rights source described what is happening in the meetings of the Constitutional Committee as “farce,” stressing the need for the Syrian opposition delegation to announce a clear withdrawal from it.

This came as a comment on what Abdulmajid Barakat, member of the Constitutional Committee, stated to Syrian opposition media about the opposition on Wednesday.

“We are considering to suspend our entry to the meeting hall if the regime continues its way,” Barakat said.

“The regime started talking about the constitutional principles in a simple way, and that there are assurances from influential countries that the regime will engage in the constitutional principles,” he added.

Barakat stated that the countries supporting the opposition, contacted the Russians to put pressure on the regime, and what is happening in Geneva is completely different from what is happening in Astana.

“Suspending entry to the meeting hall is not considered a real position,” the human rights source, who preferred not to be named, told North Press.

The source stressed, “the real position that must be taken is a clear and declared withdrawal from this farce.”

In turn, Ma’moun Abu Issa, a political opponent, told North Press, “The political optimism of the Constitutional Committee seems unrealistic after five sessions of maneuvering by the regime’s delegation.”

On January 25, the work of the Constitutional Committee began in the Swiss capital, Geneva, and is expected to continue until January 30, under the direction of Geir Pedersen, the UN Special Envoy for Syria.
