Syrian Foreign Ministry criticizes US embassy’s statements

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian government held on Saturday, the United States responsible for the suffering of the Syrian people, and criticized the statements of the US embassy in Damascus regarding the lifting of sanctions on Syria.

Two days ago, the US embassy in Damascus announced on its official Twitter, it would continue imposing sanctions on Syria until reaching a political solution based on the UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

The embassy considered that the resolution is the best way to achieving a stable future for all Syrians.

The US embassy’s statement came a year after the US outgoing President Donald Trump signed the Caesar Act.

Since then, Washington has imposed sanctions on more than 90 people and entities for supporting the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

On December 30, 2020 the US rejected the basis for the statements made by Alina Dohan, a UN Human Rights expert, to lift the sanctions on the Syrian government.

Joel Rayburn, US State Department Special Envoy to Syria, stated that the blame for Syria’s economic situation and humanitarian crisis falls on Assad’s brutal war against the Syrian people, not on U.S. sanctions.

The US embassy’s statement came in response to the UN Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan’s call to lift the sanctions on Syria, considering it the reason for the harsh conditions the Syrians are living in.

An official source in the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated to the official SANA agency that this behavior confirms the US insistence on the approach of hegemony, arrogance and unipolar control, and only listening to the voices that suit its reckless decisions in the region.

The source stressed that the lies and attempts to mislead, that were included in the American statement no longer fools anyone, and the mark of hypocrisy and lying has become an inherent feature of the American administration and its western allies.

The source called on the US administration to assume its full responsibility for the suffering of the Syrians through its support for terrorism and the imposition of sanctions that violate international laws.

The source pointed out that the results of these American policies rise to the level of crimes against humanity, and the invitation of the UN Special Rapporteur should be the beginning of holding that administration accountable for its crimes against the Syrians.
