Government soldiers killed by opposition shelling in Syria’s Latakia

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – SeveralSyrian government soldiers were killed during shelling by Turkish-backed armed opposition groups in Latakia countryside within the de-escalation zone, military sources told North Press on Thursday.

The opposition’s Fateh al-Mobin Operations Room targeted a group of Syrian government soldiers near Jabal al-Akrad, north Latakia, with an anti-armour missile, killing and wounding a number of the soldiers, the sources added.

Opposition groups responded to shelling by targeting government sites in the city of Kafr Nabl and the town of Hizareen, south of Idlib, recording no casualties.

Fateh al-Mobin claimed responsibility for sniping two government soldiers in the eastern Idlib countryside on Wednesday.

The sources added that the opposition groups’ artillery shelled government sites in Tel Burkan in Jabal al-Akrad.

The targeting took place “in response to the government and Russian flights’ violations in the de-escalation zone,” according to the sources.

The last violation occurred when Russian aircraft targeted Kabbana in the countryside of Latakia on Thursday morning, the sources stated.

An agreement signed between Moscow and Ankara in 2017, and an additional protocol to it in March, provides for the cessation of military operations in the de-escalation zone.
