Former Syrian PM dies of coronavirus

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Former Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Mustafa Miro, died of coronavirus on Tuesday at the age of 79.

Miro was born into a Sunni Muslim family in the city of al-Tal, on the outskirts of Damascus, in 1941.

According to the pro-Syrian government SANA news agency, Miro’s body will be brought from the Dar al-Shifa Hospital in Damascus at noon on Wednesday, and will be buried in his hometown of al-Tal.

Miro assumed the premiership in Syria for two successive governments, which lasted from March 2000 until September 2003.

He was previously appointed governor of Daraa from 1980 to 1986, after which he was appointed governor of Hasakah from 1986 until 1993 before becoming governor of Aleppo from 1993 until 2000.

Several Syrian officials have died of coronavirus in the past few months. On its official Facebook page, the Syrian Ministry of Industry mourned former Minister of Industry Muhammad Maan Zain al-Abidin, who succumbed to the virus on Monday.

Former Minister of Agriculture Ahmed al-Qadri also died of coronavirus, on the 3rd of September, according to Syrian media.

The number of coronavirus infections in areas held by the Syrian government has increased, as of Tuesday, to 10,442, including 4,885 recoveries and 630 deaths, according to the Syrian Health Ministry.
