Syrian Constitutional Committee meetings useless: opposition figure

ISTANBUL, Turkey (North Press) – A source from the Syrian opposition said on Tuesday that the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee are meaningless and without value.

There have been no serious stances so far, either by the international community, including Russia, or the Syrian opposition, the source added.

“Unfortunately, the UN Envoy Geir Pedersen has stated before that the work of the Constitutional Committee has no link to time or the coming elections.”

“The meetings of the Committee have become meaningless, especially since Pedersen limited the work of the Committee to constitutional amendment only,” the source noted.

The opposition source added, “We will go back to the closed circuit and moving around, because we have not seen any serious stance against the regime, neither by the international community including Russia, nor by the opposition.”

In a previous press conference, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov stressed “the impossibility of inserting a schedule for the Constitutional Committee.”

“Syria will continue according to the existing constitution in case no new is reached or in the event the current one is not amended,” he added.
