Syrian Legal Commission criticizes constitutional committee

ISTANBUL, Turkey (North Press) – The Syrian Legal Commission issued a statement on Sunday about the work of the Constitutional Committee and the Syrian High Negotiations Committee of the opposition delegation, describing the committee as “unconstitutional.”

An item of the document that the Syrian opposition delegation submitted to the Constitutional Committee meetings at the end of the fourth round early this month sparked angry reactions among Syrian opposition politicians.

The statement presented the basic references that the Syrian opposition delegation had to abide by and did not, which is the 2012 Geneva Declaration, which provided for the political transfer of power through a transitional governing body with full powers.

The statement also presented Resolution 2118 of 2013, which was issued following the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government, and which emphasized the statement of the first Geneva conference and its outputs.

“Resolution 2254 stipulated the availability of a safe and stable environment for the return of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees, and demanded that countries use their influence immediately to cease hostilities and release detainees,” the statement added.

The delegation of the Negotiation Commission and the Coalition committed heinous crimes, represented by the implementation of the Russian plan and the foreign affairs of some countries with the aim of keeping Bashar Assad in power, according to the statement.

The statement referred to their mistakes such as burying the statement of the first Geneva conference, accepting the outcomes of the Sochi conference and implementing them literally, and accepting the formation of the Constitutional Committee in order to override the political transition as agreed upon forming the negotiating body.

A member of the Syrian Legal Commission, who preferred not to be named, told North Press that the involvement of forces and delegations that claim to represent the Syrian revolution in dangerous political and negotiation tracks has become a flagrant deviation from the fundamentals of the Syrian revolution.

The source pointed out that one of the “necessities of revolutionary action” is to stop the series of concessions and to defend the revolution and adhere its principles and legitimate goals.
