DUHOK (North Press) – Rawan Mantesh, a Syrian Student from Hasakah, northeast Syria, is waiting to be honored as she had the first degree in the Department of Public Politics of the Faculty of Humanitarian Sciences at the University of Duhok in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.
The examination results for the academic year of 2019/2020 that the departments announced, showed that Syrian refugees’ students came first in 13 out of 71 departments in 19 faculties of the university.
When she fled to the Iraqi Kurdistan Region due to the Syrian war, Mantesh was a second year student in the French department at the University of Damascus.
She told North Press that she studied hard to prove that “woman is capable to be the first in term of education as well as in all fields.”
About 137 students of the Syrian refugees are studying at the University of Duhok, according to the registration data for 2019/2020.
Students are deployed in the faculties of Science, Engineering, Medicine, and others.
The total number of the students of the university for the academic year of 2019/2020, has reached 22,774, and is expected to reach 24,000 in the coming academic year.
Most Syrian refugees’ students benefit from German and Dutch scholarships in securing their studies expenses, Rawan is one of them who has benefited from DAFI German scholarship.
In addition to those who came first in their departments, many Syrian students scored high averages in their departments.
The Syrian refugees’ students have the same privileges as the students of Duhok governorate, according to Diyar Malo, the director of the registration department of the university.
“Results are announced according to scientific criteria, as no student is oppressed. They are all equal,” Malo added.
