Opposition group imposes fees on vehicles entering and exiting Syria’s Afrin

AFRIN, Syria (North Press) – An armed group of the Syrian National Army (SNA), a coalition of the Syrian opposition armed groups, imposed fees on vehicles entering and exiting the Turkish-occupied Afrin region, northwestern Syria.

“Militants of the SNA Levant Front have installed on Tuesday, checkpoints near both Kawa and Qabban Roundabouts on Jinderis Road,” a special source told North Press.

The checkpoints imposed a 500 Syrian pounds (SYP) fee for each civilian car to enter or exit the city, according to the source.

The Turkish-backed National Army groups impose a monthly fee of 2,000 SYP for each shop under the pretext of protection.

The source pointed out that the members of the groups were deployed within the city’s sectors, under the pretext of protecting the property of the residents, which are being looted and stolen.

On September 15, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry published its biannual report in which it said, “During the period under review, civilians residing in the Afrin region of Aleppo Governorate witnessed an onslaught of violations perpetrated by members of the Syrian National Army as well as shelling and vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices.”

“Looting and property confiscation by the Syrian National Army in mainly Kurdish areas is rife. Whole communities and cultures are under attack. UNESCO sites have been bulldozed and looted,” the report added.
