Shelling, military escalation in Syria’s Idlib and Hama

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – The de-escalation zone in northwest Syria’s Idlib witnessed a military escalation on Wednesday, accompanied by infiltration attempts and artillery shelling on several areas.

Military groups within the opposition’s Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room have repelled an infiltration attempt by government forces in Hama, a source from the National Front for Liberation (a Turkish-backed Syrian opposition coalition) told North Press.

The response from the opposition forces killed and wounded a number of the attacking government forces in the Ghab Plain area.

Opposition groups managed to counter another government infiltration attempt, which was accompanied with intensive clashes in Zawiya Mountain south of Idlib, the source added.

This coincided with intensive missile and artillery shelling by the government against opposition groups stationed in the town of Bara in the southern Idlib countryside.

The shelling also targeted the armed opposition headquarters in a number of villages and towns in Zawiya Mountain, though no casualties were recorded.

Meanwhile, opposition groups targeted the Russian and government headquarters in the city of Kafer Nubl in south Idlib, and two government soldiers were killed by snipers in Dadikh in eastern Idlib.

The source stated that the mutual shelling coincided with the flight of Russian drones over Idlib, Hama, and Latakia.
