Erbil, Iraq governor dies of coronavirus at 42

ERBIL (North Press) – Fersat Sofi, governor of Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG), died at 42 in a Turkish hospital due to his infection with coronavirus. 

The Office of the Kurdistan Region Presidency started necessary preparations to receive Sofi’s body.

On October 19, the office of the Erbil governor announced Sofi’s infection with coronavirus, and his transfer to Turkey for treatment after the deterioration of his health situation.

Sofi was born in the Joman region, Erbil governorate. He held several positions, such as member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in the parliament and Erbil governor in 2019.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health announced that the number of coronavirus infections in the KRG reached 90,000.
