Syrian government soldier wounded in Turkish shelling of Syria’s Tel Abyad countryside
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A Syrian government soldier was wounded in a bombardment by Turkish forces and Turkish-backed armed opposition groups on villages in the countryside of Tel Abyad (Gre-Spi) north of Raqqa.
The area has been witnessing repeated shelling by the Turkish forces and its affiliated armed opposition groups since the Turkish invasion of northeastern Syria in October 2019.
A military source told North Press that the Turkish-backed armed opposition groups and Turkish forces bombed four villages in Tel Abyad countryside.
The source added that the shelling caused injury to a member of the Syrian government forces in the village of Arida, as well as damaged residents’ property.
The region is located close to the M4 Highway, and since the Sochi agreement between Russia and Turkey in October 2019, it has been held by government forces.
Turkish forces and Turkish-backed armed opposition groups took control of the cities of Sere Kaniye and Tel Abyad and their surrounding countryside in October of 2019. Since this time, residents in the region have reported many human rights abuses, including theft, looting, assault, kidnapping and murder.
