Two civilians shot, injured by government forces in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) –Syrian government forces and Iranian militias positioning on the southern bank of the Euphrates River opened fire on two brothers on Sunday.

17-year-old Jassem Awad Abduljabbar and his brother, 18-year-old Sami, from the town of Baghouz, were fishing when they were shot and injured.

Jassem sustained chest injuries while Sami sustained injuries to his left foot, and they were hospitalized to al-Kaysoum hospital in the city of Hajin.

The area witnesses indiscriminate firing by Syrian government and Iranian militias forces daily, local sources told North Press.

The western bank of the Euphrates is divided into two regions: the first under the control of the Syrian government forces and Russian-backed armed groups, and the second to the south of it in Mayadin and Deir ez-Zor, where Iranian-backed forces operate.

Hezbollah militias are deployed in the vicinity of Deir ez-Zor Military Airport, northeastern Mayadin, while the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) position on the northern bank of it.

The SDF, with the support of the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, took the then-ISIS stronghold of Baghouz from the group in March 2019.
