Swedish Envoy to Syria: We will work to alleviate suffering of displaced people of Sere Kaniye

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – The Swedish Special Envoy to Syria, Per Orneus, pledged on Sunday to work as much as possible to alleviate the suffering of the displaced people of the Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) region and to return them to their areas as soon as possible.

This statement came during a visit by a Swedish delegation to the Camps of Washokani and Sere Kaniye to see the reality of their services.

On Saturday, Orneus arrived in the city of Qamishli, led by a delegation that included Thomas Markus, the Swedish Foreign Ministry’s humanitarian affairs officer, and Evin Çetin, adviser to the European Institute for Peace.

Orneus said the displacement of camp residents is contrary to international law and international organizations must work to find a solution to return them to their homes and cities.

If they are unable to return the displaced people to their cities, they must improve the services of the camps, he said in a press conference.

Orneus said the purpose of their visit is to look closely at the situation in North and East Syria.

He said they would convey the right picture of the area and how it would be provided with assistance.

Orneus also expressed sorrow and dismay at the lack of support for the Washokani and Sere Kaniye camps.

During two meetings with the camp’s management, the Swedish delegation heard an explanation about the situation of displaced people and the absence of international organizations operating in the region.

During the meeting, the delegation expressed shock at the lack of international organizations providing assistance, which they said would contribute significantly to helping residents of the affected areas.

The delegation also met with a number of displaced families in the two camps to hear their demands and their situation, and pledged to provide assistance for their return to their areas.
