New fires in Syria’s coast countryside

TARTOUS, Syria (North Press) – New fires broke out on Saturday afternoon, in Banias, the countryside of Tartous, al-Mezeir’a in Latakia countryside, and Qahtan Castle in Jablah.

Fires also broke out in al-Tuffah lands in the town of Ayoun al-Wadi, adjacent to Mashta al-Helu, in the countryside of Tartous. 

Local sources reported to North Press that the Civil Defense team in Latakia evacuated the residents of the village of Besot in the countryside of Latakia due to the expansion of fires in the region.     

The sources added that the fires broke out in the Kafron Haydar region in Tartous approached the residents’ houses.

New fires broke out in the lands and heights of the villages of Kafron near Mashta al-Helu and other fires in the lands of Wadi al-Ayoun town, northwest of Hama.  

Meanwhile, the Wadi al-Mujaidel fire near Mashta al-Helu and the fire near the Tobacco Foundation in Qardaha, Latakia was extinguished, according to the same sources.

The firefighting teams, in cooperation with the people, were able to put out the fires in the Dreikish-Zerib area of Mashta al-Helu.

The chair of the Directorate of Agriculture in Homs, Nazih al-Rifai, told state media that the space of land burned in Homs governorate has reached about 1,000 dunums so far.

Meanwhile, firefighting teams, with the support of government helicopters, continue extinguishing the fires in the village of Bseit and Jabal al-Arbaeen in the countryside of Qardaha.

The Latakia governorate Media Office stated that the fire in the village of Karoso was brought under control, damaging olive and lemon trees, beehives, plastic containers and electrical cables.   

Also, the fire in the village of Dergamo in al-Huweiz town, western Latakia, was extinguished, after damaging  trees and plants.

The area burned is estimated at 250 dunums planted with olive and lemon trees, and the number of affected families is estimated at about 40, according to the media office. 

On Friday, Fires broke out in the governorates of Homs, Tartous, and Latakia. 

The Syrian government declared a state of alert amid calls for support and assistance “to contribute in extinguishing the fires.”
