IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Shelling between Syrian government forces and Turkish-backed opposition groups continued in the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria on Friday, amid the flight of Russian military aircraft near the Turkish border.
Field sources told North Press that Syrian government rockets targeted Kasanfara town and Qoqafin village in south Idlib, in addition to Zeyara town west of Hama.
The sources indicated that the government bombing caused widespread destruction of civilian property and public facilities, without reporting any casualties.
The northern airspace of Idlib governorate, specifically over the displacement camps near the Syrian-Turkish border, witnessed an intense flight of Russian warplanes, though no airstrikes were reported.
Meanwhile, Turkish-backed armed opposition groups responded to the government bombing by targeting government forces’ military sites in the towns of Kafr Nabl and Hazarin south of Idlib.
The de-escalation zone has been witnessing a military escalation since mid-July, after the targeting of a joint Russian-Turkish patrol west of Ariha which resulted in the injury of Russian soldiers.
Residents of the region fear the start of a military operation similar to what happened in February when government forces, with Russian support, took control of important cities and towns in the northwest of the country.
