Clashes between SDF, ISIS in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Clashes took place between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and cells of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Tuesday morning in Jdeidat Akidat, west of Deir ez-Zor.

An SDF military source told North Press that ISIS cells targeted one of their checkpoints on the outskirts of Akidat village.

The source confirmed that the clashes are still ongoing, without recorded loses.

The source further explained that a large number of ISIS militants are participating in the clashes against the SDF, which forced the latter to bring military reinforcements to the outskirts of the village.

Though the SDF, in conjunction with Global Coalition, carries out daily operations, the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor has been witnessing intense activity from ISIS cells recently.

Unidentified gunmen assassinated an SDF official on August 3 in Basira, east of Deir ez-Zor.

Additionally, northeastern Syria has witnessed ISIS activity tied to sleeper cells in the region, including a series of riots and attacks which resulted in the death of an SDF fighter on May 17 in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.
