America to Israel: We want to benefit politically from pressures on Iran, not military confrontation

Ramallah – Ahmed Ismail – North Press

On Thursday, a US political source said that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Israeli officials, headed by Netanyahu and Gantz, during his meeting with them in Jerusalem on Wednesday that Washington was working to take advantage of the pressure imposed on Iran to obtain political results and not necessarily consider a military option.

Pompeo discussed with Israeli officials the issue of Iranian interference in Syria and Lebanon and ways to curb it. There was an overlap in the American and Israeli positions, which stressed that Iran, despite its difficult economic conditions and coronavirus, is continuing to play in the region, and that it is determined to position itself in Syria in addition to the risks of having a nuclear bomb.

Israeli political analyst Eli Nissan told North-Press that the Iranian position in Syria also does not appeal to Russia, adding, "We hear Russia criticize Bashar al-Assad over corruption, and this indicates that Putin reached a conclusion in which he does not oppose the replacement of Assad, who  continues his relationship with Iran.

Nissan added: "There are several players in Syria, and everyone is waiting for the political and field aspects and their developments in this country."

In turn, the newspaper Israel Today, which is close to Netanyahu, spoke about three American points that Pompeo delivered during his visit to Israel, namely: "security support to Israel, postponing the annexation of the West Bank, and fighting China."

Whereas The Walla site published news that closes the door on speculation that Iran will reduce its presence in Syria, according to "aerial photographs showing that  Iran is setting up a weapons-gathering camp in eastern Syria."

The Israeli media also focused on the speech of the Secretary General of Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, in which he said, "Israeli bombing will not drive Iran and Hezbollah out of Syria."

On the Chinese issue, the Hebrew Kan channel quoted US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as saying that "China is endangering the citizens of Israel."
