The Syrian Government shelling on the de-escalation zones continues to breach the ceasefire truce in Idlib, in conjunction with a statement of the Commission of Inquiry on Syria during a Human Rights Council session.
Statement by the Commission of Inquiry
The chairman of the three-member committee consisted of the Nigerian General Shikadipia Obiakor, along with Janet Lim of Singapore and Maria Santos Pace of Portugal, said on Tuesday that the de-escalation zones in Idlib have become a battlefield among the parties of the conflict.
He revealed that the operations of the Syrian government forces caused the displacement of about half a million civilians, pointing out that a number of internally displaced people (IDPs) are living in poor conditions, while sleeping in the open air, as he described.
At the request of two-thirds of the members of the Security Council, the United Nations announced the formation of a UN committee last week to investigate the reports that indicate of the Russia and the Syrian government targeting of medical points in Idlib.
The committee is due to begin its work on September 30 to investigate attacks on the United Nations backed hospitals and international bodies supplied to parties of the conflict during military operations in Idlib without giving the committee the authority to determine who was responsible for the attacks.
Russian evidence
This coincided with Russia’s presentation of “evidence” to the United Nations on the safety of hospitals in Idlib, where the Russian Ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, showed photos, which he said that it proves “the safety” of hospitals in Idlib.
The Russian official said at a press conference that he presented evidence that the Russian Air Forces didn’t target humanitarian locations in Idlib province, denying all reports of Russia’s responsibility for the killing of civilians in the province.
The Russian news agency quoted that the evidence is images of “destroyed buildings which were destroyed before or after the bombing, without any signs that they were destroyed by the Russian warplanes”.
According to the agency, the Russian ambassador claimed that, “the list of medical points granted by the United Nations to Russia, in order not to be targeted, has become a refuge for the militants, who are hiding themselves in the event of an air strike”.
Renewed shelling
While places in the areas of the de-escalation zones in northwestern Syria have been in breach of a ceasefire truce since late August.
Local media outlets reported that the Syrian government forces targeted the areas of Termalla, Ma’arat Harmah, Kafr Nabl, Hass, Kafroma and Samaka in the eastern and southern countryside of Idlib with dozens of shells, in conjunction with shelling the town of Tal Waset in al-Ghab Plain in the northwestern countryside of Hama.
The shelling caused no casualties, according to local media activists.
Counter-demonstrations
The areas under the control of the armed opposition groups and “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” witnessed renewed demonstrations involving hundreds of people, of whom North-Press observed a part of it in the city of Idlib.
The demonstration included IDPs from the town of Khan Shaykhoun, which was recently taken over by the Syrian government forces after a military operation, which was supported by the Iranian and Russian forces.
The demonstration demanded the departure of the government forces from the city of Khan Shaykhoun, while condemning the latest governmental decree of pardon, which was issued by the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
