On Friday, a military source from the Global Coalition Against ISIS told North-Press that last week, two regional ISIS leaders were killed during a joint operation between the SDF and the Global Coalition in the Basira region east of Deir ez-Zor.
The source revealed that the two leaders were Ahmad Issa Ismail al-Zawi and Ahmed Abdul Muhammed Hassan.
It added that Ahmad Issa Ismail Ibrahim al-Zawi, known as Abu Ali al-Baghdadi, was the governor of ISIS in the north of Baghdad. As a regional leader, he was responsible for transmitting orders from senior ISIS leaders to militants in northern Baghdad.
Ahmed Abdel-Muhammed Hassan al-Jughaifi, known as Abu Ammar, was a senior official in for ISIS’s logistics and supply department, and responsible for directing acquisition and transportation of weapons, explosive devices, and personnel throughout Iraq and Syria.
“The removal of the ISIS leaders will disrupt future attacks against innocent civilians and our security partners in the region," the source said.
Because of the SDF’s constant pressure, remaining ISIS leadership continues to shrink. The coalition continues to support the SDF by providing high-level advice, information-sharing, and air support, it added.
Recently, the SDF, supported by the Global Coalition, have intensified their military and security operations against leaders and ISIS militants deployed in the region.
On the 17th of May, a military source told North-Press that the SDF’s counterterrorism units carried out a security operation against ISIS cells deployed in Basira in the east of Deir ez-Zor.
The source added that the operation resulted in the arrest of a number of ISIS members, while two Iraqi members blew themselves up during their attempted arrest.
In the 2nd of May, counterterror forces affiliated with the SDF arrested two ISIS members during two separate operations in Raqqa city.
