DEIR EZ-ZOR- Syria (North Press) – Shaaban al-Ma’t, commander of the Bukamal regiment in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), was killed Thursday evening by unknown persons in the area of Hsiyat Antar on the outskirts of Hajin town in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

A source from the Deir ez-Zor Military Council told North-Press that “al-Ma’t is about 30 years old) and has recently been appointed as the commander of Bukamal Regiment.

“He was targeted by unknown persons who were riding a motor bike. We still don’t know whether if they are ISIS cells, Iranian militia, or others affiliated with the Syrian government,” the source added.

The commander of the Deir ez-Zor Military Council, Ahmed Al-Khabil, known as Abu Khawla al-Dairi, said earlier on Thursday to North-Press that "the Syrian government and Iranian militias have been working for a while to provoke discord and chaos in the towns of Deir ez-Zor by recruiting people working for them and moving across the Euphrates to the other parts located under government control.”

He added that they "obtained documents and confessions from gunmen who were arrested during their attack on the Deir ez-Zor Military Council points.”

The town of Hawayej, east of Deir ez-Zor countryside, witnessed an attack by a number of armed men on Tuesday. The assailants targeted military posts belonging to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Deir ez-Zor Military Council after protesters went out demanding  an investigation into the assassination of Sheikh Mutashar Hammoud al-Jad’an al-Hafel, an elder of the Akkidat tribe in Deir ez-Zor.
