A state of awaiting prevails at al-Rukban camp on the Syrian-Jordanian borders to receive international humanitarian aids for the first time since it was stopped last February.

As the United Nations (UN) has announced that it will send humanitarian aid to al-Rukban IDP camp in Syria near the Jordanian borders which is consisted of food, medical and essential items.

It is expected that the UN aid convoy in coordination with the Syrian Red Crescent will distribute its humanitarian cargo to more than 15.000 people within five days.

Al-Rukban IDP camp was a shelter for about 40.000 people who were living in very difficult humanitarian conditions, due to severe lack in food and medical supplies, while more than half of the IDPs have left the camp to the Syrian government forces (SDF) held areas.

Al-Rukban IDP camp was established in southeastern Syria on the Jordanian borders to be a haven for thousands of civilians who had fled from Homs, Damascus countryside, Daraa and Deir ez-Zor, due to the attacks by the Syrian government forces and the Islamic State (ISIS) on their areas.

Earlier, the Jordanian authorities had stopped UN relief convoys to the camp in mid-2016 after an ISIS car bomb attack against a Jordanian military post nearby the camp.

The spokesman of the Public and Political Relations in al-Rukban Camp, Shukri Shehab had previously told North-Press that the number of those who want to return to the areas controlled by the SDF doesn’t exceed 10% of the remaining number.

The spokesman confirmed at that time that the UN offices had promised them to send an aid convoy to al-Rukban camp on September 4, noting that “those who will remain in the camp, will be provided with assistance and medical services”.

“The camp has been under siege since February, after sending the last aid convoy to al-Rukban camp”, he said.

The UN delegation visited the camp on August 17 and conducted a questionnaire about who would leave the camp towards the Syrian government held areas and northern Syria, and who would like to stay in the camp, while the aid will be provided early this month.
