Autonomous Administration: We seek to implement a law regulating media work in northeastern Syria

The Media Office of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria revealed on Tuesday their intention to develop a new law for the media, as part of efforts to reach a “strategic approach” in order to develop media work in the area.

In a statement published on the occasion of Kurdish Press Day, the Media Office added that the new media law would allow journalists to exercise their rights and obligations in accordance with professional ethics and global journalistic principles.

It referred to its endeavor to develop media work in northeastern Syria and to reach a “strategic approach to thinking, and to stay away from the immediate interaction with the events and circumstances.”  

In 2016, the Autonomous Administration in al-Jazira region approved a law regulating media work but it subsequently faced widespread criticism from journalists, due to “failure to activate the law.”

Today, April 22nd, Kurdish media outlets and political parties celebrate the 122nd anniversary of the printing of the first Kurdish newspaper “Kurdistan” in the Egyptian capital Cairo by Prince Miqdad Medhat Bader-khan.
