A collective exhibition for plastic arts entitled “A story by you turned into colors by us”, was opened on Wednesday in al-Tilal Street in Kobani, northern Syria, under the auspices of the Culture Commission in the Euphrates Region (an administrative division comprising several cities) and Rojava Intellectuals Union.
The exhibition is the second of its kind which was held by artist Muhammed Shahin in the city of Kobani with the participation of his students at the Institute.
Participation of 83 paintings
According to plastic artist Muhammed Shahin who supervised the preparations of the exhibition, the collective exhibition includes 83 plastic paintings, which tell the stories of the people in Kobani, where 32 artists of his students had participated .
He explained that the aim of the exhibition which is held in a neighborhood that is considered to be a place for shopping, is to get much closer to the people and hear the stories of them, about “martyrdom, migration and displacement”, and utilize them in turn to be a topic for paintings in the future.
Large audience
Narin Abdi, a participants in the exhibition, explained that the idea of opening an exhibition in al-Tilal Street, a famous street in Kobani, made our paintings to be seen by a large number of people, especially since there are a number of residents who saw the exhibition by chance, as the street is a crowded place of shoppers.
Narin added that all segments of the community, children, women and the elderly have seen the exhibition, although many of them may be uninterested in attending such an activity if it would take place in closed halls, which are usually attended by a small number of the general public.
A unique and strange idea
Sherin Bozan, one of Kobani’s residents said that the idea of holding the exhibition in a place for shopping is strange and new, where such exhibitions are usually held in gardens and closed lounges, noting that coming across the exhibition coincidentally is a distinctive idea.
Paintings
In turn, the participant in the exhibition Daniel Mustafa, explained that each participating artist contributed with a number of paintings in the exhibition depending on their possibilities, desire and energies, which ranged from one painting to four for each participant, pointing out that the paintings varied between drawing with color, charcoal and pencil.
For his part, the co-chair of the Culture Commission in the Euphrates Region Rezan Naasan explained that the Commission has supported the idea of the exhibition as it serves the community’s cultural values, and will continue to support any artistic and cultural works that serve the community.
Naasan revealed ongoing preparations by the Culture Commission for other cultural projects in the city of Kobani, including works of sculpture and statues, participated by artists from the city.
It is worth mentioning that artist Muhammed Shahin had held his first collective exhibition at Kobani Museum, entitled “The Talk of Faces” in October 2018, with the participation of 12 artists and 39 paintings.
