In coincidence with launching workshops for rehabilitation and maintenance of the Damascus – Aleppo highway, studies are being conducted in the Syrian Ministry of Transport to open a strategic tunnel linking the governorates of Hama and Latakia.
The Syrian Minister of Transport Ali Hammoud revealed that the Ministry of Transport is studying the possibility of opening a tunnel linking al-Ghab Plain in Hama with Latakia, in order to facilitate and accelerate the movement and transport of the agricultural products between the two governorates, whether towards the ports on the coast or towards the industrial cities inside Syria.
Hammoud said in a press statement to the media outlets: “Al-Ghab Plain is a very important agricultural reservoir for Syria; therefore attention should be paid to the transfer of these crops and the delivery to the ports for export, as well as transferring in the opposite direction”.
He added that the Ministry of Transport’s initial study includes a distance of no more than 13 km, i.e. the distance will take about 7 minutes.
On July 30, 2019, the tunnel project began to be discussed with the concerned managers in Hama, Idlib and Raqqa governorates.
